The hugely popular theatre group Red Nose Company brings its new production Voces -- Inner Voices to Oulu. This staged concert for two clowns and the Meta4 string quartet combines the most beautiful chamber music classics with theatrical storytelling. There will be laughter -- but you may want to prepare for tears as well. The performance is built around Jean Sibelius's string quartet Voces Intimae, but also features music from Beethoven to Saariaho. At the time of composing the piece, a throat tumor caused Sibelius to fear death. The performance takes this as its starting point. Audience comments: "Magnificent, sacred, and funny!" "Voces showed how music can take the mind deep within itself. A brilliant combination of clowns and chamber music carried the audience along." "Red Nose Company entertains and surprises! Astonishingly refined and fearless -- such versatile art!" Red Nose Company Timo Ruuskanen Tuukka Vasama Meta4 Minna Pensola, violin Antti Tikkanen, violin Atte Kilpeläinen, viola Tomas Djupsjöbacka, cello Duration: 2 h 15 min, including intermission The concert includes music from Finland, Estonia, Germany/England, and Italy/Norway. Concerto for Orchestra SEASON CONCERT I Thu 3.9. at 18:30 Madetoja Hall Rumon Gamba conductor Angela Hewitt piano Oulu Sinfonia Program: Frederic Devreese: Benvenuta Suite No. 1 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Piano Concerto No. 16 in D major, K. 451 --- Béla Bartók: Concerto for Orchestra, Sz. 116 The legendary Angela Hewitt continues her worldwide tour performing all of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's piano concertos as a complete cycle. In Oulu, she presents the effervescent Piano Concerto No. 16 in D Major, radiating youthful Viennese spirit. Belgium's perhaps best-known contemporary composer, Frederik Devreese, made his name equally as a master of film music. His Benvenuta Suite pulses with decadence and fantasy, carried along by the rhythms of tango, habanera and waltz. Béla Bartók transformed the music of Hungary into a gift for the entire world. His final -- and by far most frequently performed -- work is the Concerto for Orchestra, a landmark of neoclassicism. Striking solos pass from one instrument to the next for nearly forty minutes. Head start at Restaurant Preludi at 18.00. Discussion of the forthcoming concert. Oulu is the European Capital of Culture in 2026. Concerto for the Orchestra is part of the Oulu2026 cultural programme and the cultural climate change initiative. *** Duration about 2 h (incl. intermission) TIckets 32€ normal / 27 € pensioner / 19 € student, unemployed, child (3--17 yrs) Free entry to the concert for Kaikukortti holders (limited amount, must be purchased in advance from Oulu10 service point). Carried by the Current SEASON CONCERT II Thu 10.9. at 18:30 Madetoja Hall Stefan Geiger conductor Vanessa Cunha piano Mika Rännäli piano Oulu Sinfonia Program: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Idomeneo, K. 367 Francis Poulenc: Concerto for Two Pianos in D minor --- Robert Schumann: Symphony No. 3 in Eb Major, Op. 98, "Rheinish" Stefan Geiger returns to the Madetoja Hall with a programme guaranteed to lift the spirits! Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote more than twenty operas, and Idomeneo may well be the finest of them all. The ballet suite drawn from the opera distils its full-length drama into a concert opener brimming with colour and character. Robert Schumann wrestled with the symphonic form until, in his Third Symphony, he finally found the key. Its majestically flowing character depicts the River Rhine -- a broad, surging, inexhaustible source of inspiration. The French composer Francis Poulenc was, all at once, a devout Catholic, an eternal schoolboy and a gleeful iconoclast. His most beloved work, the Concerto for Two Pianos, is a vivid reflection of his personality -- a joyful extravaganza laced with irony, where early jazz, contemplative stillness and the spirit of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart meet and mingle. Head start at Restaurant Preludi at 18.00. Discussion of the forthcoming concert. Oulu is the European Capital of Culture in 2026. Wonders of Italy SEASON CONCERT III Thu 17.9. at 18:30 Madetoja Hall Nil Venditti conductor Maria Krykov double bass Oulu Sinfonia Program: Giacomo Puccini: Preludio sinfonico Giovanni Bottesini: Double Bass Concerto No. 1 in F# minor -- Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Symphony No. 4 in A Major, Op. 90, "Italian" Conductor sensation Nil Venditti brings the wonders of Italy to Oulu. The symphonic overture by Giacomo Puccini, composed as his graduation work, is sheer beauty. Melodies steeped in wistfulness hint at the passions that would later blaze in Tosca and La Bohème. Finland's newest double bass star, Maria Krykov, principal of the Berlin Konzerthaus Orchestra, visits Madetoja Hall to perform Giovanni Bottesini's Double Bass Concerto -- a dazzling virtuosic showpiece that earned its composer the nickname "the Paganini of the double bass". The Beauty of Incomplete SEASON CONCERT IV Thu 8.10. at 18:30 Madetoja Hall Vuokko Lahtinen conductor Jennifer Stumm viola Oulu Sinfonia Program: Sofia Gubaidulina: Fairytale Poem Béla Bartók: Viola Concerto, Sz120 --- Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 6 in D minor, Op. 104 Béla Bartók found a final flourishing shortly before his death. His Viola Concerto, a study in neoclassical simplicity, was left unfinished. Once completed by Bartók's friends it quickly became a cornerstone of the instrument's repertoire and one of the landmark works of the century. In Oulu, it will be performed by American star Jennifer Stumm. Mysticism, spiritual growth, sound and energy converge in the music of Sofia Gubaidulina, one of the last century's greatest composers. Her Fairytale Poem (1971) is a richly symbolic musical fable, easy to relate to: a frustrated pastel crayon contemplates its untapped talents as the end draws near. Conductor Vuokko Lahtinen's graduation concert culminates with Jean Sibelius's sixth symphony, a refreshing counterpoint to 1920s modernism. Head start at Restaurant Preludi at 18.00.
