OMJ Jazz & Etno: Senni Heiskanen ja Rauno Nieminen: Kerman vaskikanteleet Tues 29.9.2026 19:00 Mallassauna Pikisaarentie 15, 90100 Oulu Duration approx. 1,5 h (including intermission) Senni Heiskanen & Rauno Nieminen: Kerman vaskikanteleet Senni Heiskanen and Rauno Nieminen have been performing together for seven years. Their collaboration began with the Saarijärvi kantele tradition, but in recent years their music has increasingly focused on a rarer and more archaic instrument: the five-string brass kantele. The brass strings of the brass kantele give the instrument a distinctive voice---deep, bright, and richly nuanced. The duo's repertoire is based primarily on kantele melodies collected over a century ago from the regions of Savo, Karelia, and Northern Ostrobothnia. Stylistically informed improvisation is also an essential part of their performances. These melodies represent the oldest layer of the Finnish kantele tradition, where an entire musical world unfolds from just a handful of notes. In the summer of 2026, the duo released their album The Brass Kanteles of Kerma, bringing renewed attention to this unique instrument and its centuries-old tradition. "The whole range of their melodies is confined to these five notes; with these five notes they play, dance, and sing their poems. It is easy to imagine that the effect of such music must be melancholy and monotonous, and equally easy to suppose that it could not be improved until they abandoned this instrument. Yet savage and half-civilized peoples are as moderate in their intellectual pleasures as they are in their physical ones." --- Giuseppe Acerbi, 1802 Learn more about the Jazz & Ethno concert series of Oulu Music Festival at omj.fi.
