Oulu Sinfonia: Carmen
MADETOJAN SALI
Carmen SPECIAL CONCERT Thu 1.10. at 18.30 Madetoja Hall Conductor Maria Itkonen Choreography and dance Israel Galván Cantaora, guitar Maria Marin Carmen Niina Keitel Don José Timothy Richards Escamillo Tuomas Pursio Mieskuoro Huutajat Oulu Sinfonia Authors: Music Georges Bizet Choreography Israel Galván Tech Director and Sound Pedro Leon Lighting Valentin Donaire Stage Manager Balbi Barra Dramaturg Charles Chemin What happens when Georges Bizet's opera Carmen -- a feast of jealous passion and fatal love -- collides with the flamenco visionary from Seville, Israel Galván? The result is a journey to the very heart of Carmen. Familiar opera arias burn brightly, yet the result is a classic pulsating in a totally new form, in which the love story is told by three opera singers, a cantaora and a flamenco dancer. At its side stands a full symphony orchestra, as Carmen demands -- and, in an audacious twist, the acclaimed Oulu-based male choir Huutajat! Where Bizet's Carmen is a romantic opera of doomed destiny and jealous obsession, Galván's Carmen becomes a contemporary ritual. The tale is dismantled, inverted and rebuilt through dance, cry and a multi-layered soundscape. Having reinterpreted classics such as Igor Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, Galván approaches these masterpieces in his own style: intimate, provocative, veiled by humour, but never diminished. "Everything is veiled in musical exaggeration and fantasy. The performance ends in love -- not the knife," he sums up. Oulu is the European Capital of Culture in 2026. Carmen is part of the Oulu2026 cultural programme and the cultural climate change initiative. *** Duration about1 h 20 min (no intermission) Tickets 58 € normal / 48 € pensioner / 38 € student, unemployed, child (3--17 yrs) Free entry to the concert for Kaikukortti holders (limited amount, must be purchased in advance from Oulu10 service point). OMJ Jazz & Etno: Senni Heiskanen ja Rauno Nieminen
Location TBC
OMJ Jazz & Etno: Senni Heiskanen ja Rauno Nieminen: Kerman vaskikanteleet Tues 29.9.2026 19:00 Mallassauna Pikisaarentie 15, 90100 Oulu Duration approx. 1,5 h (including intermission) Senni Heiskanen & Rauno Nieminen: Kerman vaskikanteleet Senni Heiskanen and Rauno Nieminen have been performing together for seven years. Their collaboration began with the Saarijärvi kantele tradition, but in recent years their music has increasingly focused on a rarer and more archaic instrument: the five-string brass kantele. The brass strings of the brass kantele give the instrument a distinctive voice---deep, bright, and richly nuanced. The duo's repertoire is based primarily on kantele melodies collected over a century ago from the regions of Savo, Karelia, and Northern Ostrobothnia. Stylistically informed improvisation is also an essential part of their performances. These melodies represent the oldest layer of the Finnish kantele tradition, where an entire musical world unfolds from just a handful of notes. In the summer of 2026, the duo released their album The Brass Kanteles of Kerma, bringing renewed attention to this unique instrument and its centuries-old tradition. "The whole range of their melodies is confined to these five notes; with these five notes they play, dance, and sing their poems. It is easy to imagine that the effect of such music must be melancholy and monotonous, and equally easy to suppose that it could not be improved until they abandoned this instrument. Yet savage and half-civilized peoples are as moderate in their intellectual pleasures as they are in their physical ones." --- Giuseppe Acerbi, 1802 Learn more about the Jazz & Ethno concert series of Oulu Music Festival at omj.fi. Oulu Sinfonia: The Beauty of Incomplete
MADETOJAN SALI
The Beauty of Incomplete SEASON CONCERT IV Thu 8.10. at 18:30 Madetoja Hall Vuokko Lahtinen conductor Jennifer Stumm viola Oulu Sinfonia Program: Sofia Gubaidulina: Fairytale Poem Béla Bartók: Viola Concerto, Sz120 --- Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 6 in D minor, Op. 104 Béla Bartók found a final flourishing shortly before his death. His Viola Concerto, a study in neoclassical simplicity, was left unfinished. Once completed by Bartók's friends it quickly became a cornerstone of the instrument's repertoire and one of the landmark works of the century. In Oulu, it will be performed by American star Jennifer Stumm. Mysticism, spiritual growth, sound and energy converge in the music of Sofia Gubaidulina, one of the last century's greatest composers. Her Fairytale Poem (1971) is a richly symbolic musical fable, easy to relate to: a frustrated pastel crayon contemplates its untapped talents as the end draws near. Conductor Vuokko Lahtinen's graduation concert culminates with Jean Sibelius's sixth symphony, a refreshing counterpoint to 1920s modernism. Head start at Restaurant Preludi at 18.00. Discussion of the forthcoming concert. Oulu is the European Capital of Culture in 2026. The Beauty of Incomplete is part of the Oulu2026 cultural programme and the cultural climate change initiative. *** Duration about 1 h 40 min (incl. intermission) TIckets 32€ normal / 27 € pensioner / 19 € student, unemployed, child (3--17 yrs) Free entry to the concert for Kaikukortti holders (limited amount, must be purchased in advance from Oulu10 service point). OMJ Jazz & Etno: Julien Tassin & Heikki Ruokangas
Aaltosiilo
OMJ Jazz & Etno: Julien Tassin & Heikki Ruokangas Wed 7.10.2026 at 20:00 AaltoSiilo Alvar Aallon katu 5, 90520 Oulu Duration approx. 1 h (no intermission) Out of a mutual love of spontaneousness and raw emotions, Belgian guitarist Julien Tassin and Finnish guitarist Heikki Ruokangas decided to start creating music together. As two guitars aiming to sound like one. The two guitarists met while they were both signed to the Australian avant-garde label Ramble Records. As they talked on Instagram, they wanted to play music together, so they travelled --- Julien to Finland and Heikki to Belgium --- bringing different cultures and influences together while also realizing they had a lot in common. Both studied classical music and traditional jazz before entering the improvisational music world, and both share a similar musical vision. In their music, the concrete and the abstract can co-exist at any moment. Melodic lines are combined with atonal sounds, creating an organic and exploratory approach to the acoustic guitar. Just like life itself, the music of this duo contains both beauty and beast. And, like the musicians themselves, it also carries a playful sense of humor. Their travels led to the composition of a new repertoire, which was recorded somewhere between Belgium and Finland. This material became the duo's debut album, Behind The Mask, released in August 2025. To celebrate the release, the duo embarked on a 17-concert tour across five countries. The final concert of the tour was recorded and will be released as Live In Brussels in May 2026 on the American label zOaR, run by Elliott Sharp. The tour also expanded the duo's musical language into new territory. Their performances began incorporating additional instruments such as mandolin and bells, along with various sonic accessories. The result captures a moment of rare intensity, where the two musicians push both their instruments and repertoire further than ever before. Their distinctive approach to the guitar duo format reaches new heights through the raw energy and immediacy of live performance. Heikki Ruokangas is a guitarist and composer from Oulu, Finland. He has appeared on more than twenty albums and compilation recordings and has performed extensively in Finland, the United States, and throughout Europe. He is considered one of the most prolific and internationally active Finnish guitarists of his generation, with releases published worldwide by several record labels. The dialogue between beauty and ugliness in melody lies at the heart of Ruokangas's musical expression, with melodicism always at its center. His musical storytelling combines the longing of the Finnish waltz, the starkness of delta blues, the deep echoes of Western-style twang guitar, and the ecstasy of jazz. Together, these elements form Ruokangas's vision of a slightly askew, distinctly Finnish sonic landscape. Ruokangas also challenges preconceived attitudes toward contemporary art by breaking down the elitist and inaccessible image often associated with it. With a unique and unmistakable approach to music and his instrument, Julien Tassin is a truly distinctive guitarist. Using unconventional techniques and original tunings, he creates music that blends elements of blues, jazz, classical, Oriental, and African traditions. The result is music born from openness and freedom. To date, Tassin has released twelve albums under his own name, exploring formats ranging from intimate solo performances to dynamic quartet settings. Over the years, he has built a substantial and coherent body of work shaped by spontaneity, natural expression, and a constant search for what feels essential. This immediacy is present in both his compositions and improvisations, where instinct and depth unfold with clarity and restraint. He has brought these various projects to some of Belgium's most renowned venues and toured extensively across Europe. In recent years, his creative path has continued to expand through collaborations with international musicians from diverse musical backgrounds, further enriching and broadening his artistic voice.
