A sense of space, mild weather, and a powerful finale The concert opens with a short work by the Bulgarian-British composer Dobrinka Tabakova. *Orpheus' Comet* evokes a sense of space and movement. Next comes *Halkyoniska dagar* (Halcyon Days) by Britta Byström, a piece that allows its sonorities to linger; the title refers to a period of calm, mild weather. The soloist is flautist Laura Michelin from Norrköping, one of Sweden's most acclaimed young musicians. The second half of the concert features Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 5, one of the composer's most frequently performed symphonies. The music begins in a dark, restrained manner but gradually builds to a powerful and triumphant finale---offering the orchestra a chance to display its full dynamic range, from hushed intimacy to grand, majestic power.
